Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 442's Website!

We are the Boy Scouts from Troop 442 in Wylie, Texas

My name is Christopher Jennings, I am the Scoutmaster for Troop 442 in Wylie Texas and I am also an Eagle Scout. My family joined Troop 442 in February of 2016 after my son, Brady, earned his Arrow of Light.  I want to thank you for visiting our website, I too had many questions as a perspective boy scout parent, so I thought I would share some of the things that were top of mind for me when we visited here.

Troop 442 is a ~40 boy troop that has a lot to offer our youth. We are Chartered by Sanden International in Wylie, TX.  We meet weekly, camp monthly, attend summer camp and send a crew to a high adventure camp each summer.

Our Troop is a boy led organization, every 6 months we hold a “TOW” Troop Organizational Weekend where the scouts elect their new leaders and plan the next 6 campout activities and locations.  All scouts have a voice in planning, not just older scouts so participation is key for everyone.

Does learning how to camp, hike, canoe and cook in the outdoors sounds like fun?  Does being in a boy led, service organization that teaches youth how to lead sound like something for you and your son?  If any of that sounds appealing, you and your son should check us out!

Where and when do you meet?

We meet in the gym/Family Life Center of The First United Methodist Church of Sachse on Tuesday nights from 7-8:30 PM.   The church is located at 1520 Blackburn Rd., Sachse, Texas 75048.

We train our leaders.

All scouts deserve trained leaders. Annually we conduct an ISLT (Into to Scout Leadership Training) campout as a troop; and, as scouts get older and advance in rank they participate in both Oak Leaf (Patrol Leader Training) & NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training). Our adults also attend training for adult leadership positions, First Aid, etc.

We Give Back.

We participate in national service projects like Scouting for Food (filling the local food banks) but we also give back locally as we participated in Sachse clean-up day, clean-up projects for the church who hosts our meetings and we are constantly making service hours available on campouts and other events in the community.

Who is eligible to join Boy Scouts?

Boys who are 11 years of age, or 10 years old and finished with 5th grade or have earned the Webelos Arrow of Light award, and are not yet 18 years old are welcome to join Boy Scout Troop 442.  Our troop is a diverse unit of boys who come together to grow as individuals and as members of a Boy Scout patrol.  Neither boys in the troop nor their families are required to be members of Sachse FUMC -- in fact most members of the troop are not members of Sachse FUMC.

Boys who are under the age of 11 or have not finished the 5th grade are encouraged to check out local Cub Scouting if they have not completed the Cub Scout Webelos Arrow of Light award; boys who are working on their Arrow of Light award are invited to visit our troop meetings and campouts to help complete their Arrow of Light and prepare for their transition from Cub Scouts to a Boy Scout troop (hopefully Troop 442!)

So how do I get involved as an adult?

Our Troop Committee is a mix of adult volunteers who currently have an enrolled youth or former scouts from Troop 442.  Any parent/guardian regardless of previous scouting experience may join and participate in the Troop 442 Committee or assist in one the many roles that help our troop be its best. We also like parents to participate in at least 1 board of review per year. A Board of Review is a scout’s last activity for a rank advancement and is like a panel interview where scouts talk to adults that are not his parent or his Scoutmaster, and it is an awesome experience for parents to get a good glimpse into what their boy is going through, it is a meaningful for all participants.

Scouting is open to view during any of the activities we participate in, so parents are a welcome addition to meetings, campouts and service projects.

We also need your special skills, we love our merit badge counselors! With 135 Merit badges, there is always room for merit badge counselors. Check out www.meritbadge.org to see which opportunities you might be able to lend a special hand with.
